The impact of fiber quality on attenuation can be measured through experiments using the following commonly used testing methods:
Truncation method:

This is the benchmark test method for measuring the attenuation characteristics of optical fibers. Without changing the injection conditions, the attenuation of the fiber can be directly obtained by measuring the optical power of the two cross-sections of the fiber.
Use a fiber optic mode field diameter and attenuation spectrum measuring instrument for testing, and record the transmission power.

Insertion loss method:
This method is an alternative test method for measuring the attenuation characteristics of optical fibers. In principle, it is similar to the truncation method, but the optical power at the fiber injection end is the output optical power at the injection system output end.
Note that the measured fiber attenuation includes the attenuation of the test device, so the measurement results must be corrected separately with additional connector loss and reference fiber segment loss.
Backscatter method:
Backscattering method is another alternative experimental method for measuring the attenuation characteristics of optical fibers. It measures the backscattered light power from different points in the fiber to the beginning of the fiber.
This is a single ended measurement method, and the instrument used for testing is an optical time-domain reflectometer.
Comparative method:
Prepare fiber optic samples of different qualities, such as high-quality and low-quality fibers.
Measure the attenuation characteristics of these fiber samples using the truncation method, insertion loss method, or backscatter method mentioned above.
By comparing the attenuation data of different quality optical fibers, the impact of fiber quality on attenuation can be analyzed.
When conducting experiments, the following points should also be noted:
Ensure stable testing environment and avoid external interference.
Use high-quality light sources and measuring equipment to reduce testing errors.
Perform multiple measurements on each fiber optic sample and take the average to improve the accuracy of the results.
Select the appropriate testing wavelength and conditions based on the experimental purpose and fiber type.
Through these experimental methods, the impact of fiber quality on attenuation can be quantitatively evaluated, providing important references for the design and optimization of fiber optic communication systems.
